Pupil Premium

Pupil premium is additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers.


In the 2016-17 financial year, Pupil Premium Funding was:


£1,320 for primary-aged pupils (Reception to Year 6)

£935 for secondary-aged pupils (Year 7 to Year 11)

£1,900 for each pupil who has left local authority care because of one of the following:

  • adoption
  • a special guardianship order
  • a child arrangements order
  • a residence order


A school may spend this money as they see fit but must demonstrate they are improving the performance of pupils in receipt of the grant.  A school does not have to spend an equal amount on each eligible pupil and at Alderwood this grant is targeted at meeting the individual needs of eligible pupils.


Ofsted inspections report on how schools’ use of the funding affects the attainment of their disadvantaged pupils.


Schools are also held to account through performance tables, which include data on:

  • the outcomes of the pupils who attract the funding
  • the progress made by these pupils
  • the gap in outcomes between pupil premium pupils and their peers


16 of the 24 pupils at Alderwood are dual registered. That is, although they attend Alderwood full time, they remain on roll in their home schools. This means that any pupil premium due is paid directly by the Education funding agency, to the home school. In order for Alderwood to access this finding, we must invoice each school and request the funding is transferred. Headteachers are under no legal obligation to pay this money to Alderwood; however, the guidance from the local authority is that this funding is transferred appropriately when a child is in a dual placement. Ofsted expect Alderwood to take all reasonable steps to achieve this transfer.


All pupils in the Bridge are registered as Alderwood pupils however; pupil premium received is based only on those children who are in a Bridge placement at the point of the January schools census and does not reflect any changes that occur during the year. Pupil Premium funding for looked-after children (LAC) is not allocated to schools but to the virtual school head in the LA, who works with the LAC coordinator to decide how the money should best be spent to meet the needs of the child.

Summary of PPG spending 2015-16 financial year

Objectives in spending PPG:

  • Help pupil overcome their historic barriers to learning. This was to address some of these barriers directly, that is, to have their basic needs met as soon as they arrive in school each day and have this done is such a way that they are not treated differently or identified as disadvantaged to other children.
  •  To increase self confidence as a learner and reduce anxiety at the fear of academic failure.
  • Reduce the social skill deficits for children who have struggled to engage positively with peers and adults and as result failed to engage fully in school.
  • Support access to all aspects of school life for a child and their parent.
  • To narrow the gap in attainment in literacy and numeracy.


Summary of PPG spending and actions taken
  • Access to weekly sessions with a school counsellor to address historic barriers to learning and attitudes to school, to develop self-awareness and identify strategies to help promote positive communication with others and help staff develop their understanding of mental health.
  • Specialised materials to enable pupils with specific learning difficulties to access learning alongside their peers.
  • Provision of and access to breakfast and break time fruit and toast for all pupils to ensure all pupils regardless of their situations are able to have basic needs met every day and to do so without being identified to their peers.
  • Staff training, to ensure children have the personalised support they need and highly trained staff can run evidenced based interventions and develop and grow new staff.
  • Recruitment and contribution towards the salary of newly appointed Home School Link Worker to help engage the difficult to reach families and enable progress to be sustained by helping families understand how to help their children’s learning.
  • Contribute to maintaining an offer of a HSLW
  • Maintaining access to the school counsellor for those pupils with severe social, emotional or mental health needs.
  • Provision of breakfast for all pupils.
  • Enhance and enrich the curriculum to give children the chance to experience new challenges and develop self-confidence as a learner.















 Over the last 5 years there has been no statistically significant difference between the average progress of the cohort and the progress of pupils who attract pupil premium funding at Alderwood although data sets are small.
